Edouard Manet (French, 1832–1883)

With Courbet, Manet was the figure painter who most influenced the impressionists. Isabelle Lemonnier was a prominent young Parisian bourgeoise whom Manet knew well and had painted many times. In this final study, done in Manet’s last months of failing health, she seems detached and almost melancholic.
