Q: What kinds of tickets are available for King Tut? What do I need to know when purchasing tickets?

A: All tickets to the King Tut exhibition are timed and dated. You will need to know what day (between October 3, 2008, and May 17, 2009) and what time (entrance is on the half hour) you want to see the exhibition. The exhibition is open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. seven days a week with the last ticket sold for 6:30 p.m. entry. You should allow at least ninety minutes to view the exhibition.  Individual ticket prices range between $16.50 for children (ages 6–17) and $32.50 for adults. Weekend and holiday ticket prices are higher than weekday ticket prices (Mondays through Thursdays). Click here for ticket prices.

Please select your date and time carefully, as no refunds or exchanges will be made. If you arrive later than your ticketed time, the Museum will try and work you in, based on availability, but cannot guarantee it. Please consider that limited parking will be available on-site at the Museum, so when planning your visit please allow extra time to park.

Q: Why are some dates on Ticketmaster not available?

A: Due to the popularity of the exhibition, some Ticketmaster dates may be sold out even though the dates appear to be available. When dates that are sold out or not available are selected, the system will not allow purchase. Please contact a Ticketmaster representative at 1-877-TUT-TKTS (1-877-888-8587) for assistance in purchasing tickets for the day you prefer.

Please plan to have several dates pre-selected before you contact Ticketmaster. Having more than one date option will give you and your family a better chance of finding a time with available tickets.

Q: Does the ticket price include an audio tour of the exhibition?

A: Audio tours of the exhibition may be purchased separately. The audio tour provides in-depth information on many of the exhibition’s most important pieces and is a perfect companion to your experience. Audio tours are available in Spanish and English for $7.00 (adult) and $6.00 (child, DMA member, and groups).

Q: Does the exhibition ticket include general admission to the rest of the Museum?

A: Yes, general admission to the Museum (normally $10 for an adult ticket) is included in any King Tut exhibition ticket that is purchased. Hours for the King Tut exhibition will not mirror Museum hours, so plan your visit for a day and time when you can tour the Museum’s expansive permanent collection. For a list of other special exhibitions on view, click here.

Q: What other ticket options do I have?

A: A 3-D movie entitled Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs, narrated by Christopher Lee, will be on view in the Museum’s Horchow Auditorium. The movie length is approximately twenty-five minutes and it runs on the hour from 10:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. (seven showings daily) on Tuesdays through Sundays (not available on Mondays). Tickets to the film are available in advance through Ticketmaster or can be purchased during your visit for $5.00. We encourage you to purchase tickets in advance as seating is limited. Tickets to the film are dated but not timed, allowing you the flexibility to enjoy the film before or after you see the exhibition. Be aware that the last viewing of the film is at 4:00 p.m. Please note—no food or beverages are allowed inside Horchow Auditorium.

Q: I would like to see the exhibition and am traveling from outside of Dallas. Are there any travel packages or discounts offered for the exhibition?

A: Yes. For travel and hotel packages, as well as information on local restaurants, shopping, and other arts and cultural attractions, check our Web site as well as the Web site for the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau, DallasCVB.com.

Q: Will tickets be timed and dated for the exhibition? Can I purchase tickets the day I want to visit?

A: Yes, tickets to the exhibition will be timed and dated. We expect advance ticket sales to be high; the Museum strongly encourages people to purchase their tickets to King Tut in advance as the exhibition capacity is limited, and times and dates will sell out. Individual tickets for the exhibition may be available the day of your visit on-site at the Museum; however, the Museum cannot predict availability. There may be tickets available for day-of purchase but the Museum can make no guarantees.

Please select your date and time carefully, as no refunds or exchanges will be made. Please arrive at least fifteen minutes before your ticketed time. If you arrive later than your ticketed time, the Museum will try and work you in, based on availability, but we cannot guarantee it. Please consider that on-site parking at the Museum will be limited, so when planning your visit allow extra time to park.

Q: Why do I need to purchase tickets for a specific time?

A: When you purchase your tickets, you will be asked for a date and time you would like to see the exhibition. For example, if you purchase tickets for October 3, 2008, at 10:00 a.m., you will enter between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. This half-hour window allows us to manage the number of people in the exhibition at any given time.

The last ticket to the exhibition will be sold for 6:30 p.m. Exceptions to this are on Thursday nights and Late Night Fridays (the third Friday of each month), when the last ticket sold on Ticketmaster will be 7:30 p.m. for Thursdays and 10:30 p.m. for Late Nights.

Q: How long should I expect to wait in line?

A: Guests may begin lining up for the exhibition thirty minutes prior to their ticketed time. It takes approximately thirty minutes to admit all ticket-holders for one timeslot when we are at full capacity.

Q: Can I enter/exit the exhibition more than once with my ticket?

A: No. Tickets are for one entry per person only and do not allow for re-entry. Used tickets will show as such in our system to prevent re-entry.

EXHIBITION CONTENT

Q: Why is the exhibition titled Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs?

A: The exhibition is displayed in two parts: the first features artifacts associated with Tutankhamun’s predecessors, and explores ancient Egypt prior to Tutankhamun’s reign; the second part of the exhibition features objects found in Tutankhamun’s tomb by Howard Carter in 1922.

Q: Is this the same exhibition that was in Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, Chicago, Philadelphia, and London?

A: The tour coming to the Dallas Museum of Art will feature more than 130 works that were part of the most recent U.S. tour, which visited Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, Chicago, Philadelphia, and London. It will, however, also include new objects specific to the Dallas presentation that have never been seen outside Egypt. These artifacts are being selected in Egypt and will be announced at a later date.

Q: This isn’t the first time a King Tut exhibition has been in the United States. How is this exhibit different?

A: A collection of artifacts from Tut’s tomb toured the U.S. from 1976 to 1979 as a part of the Treasures of Tutankhamun exhibition. Twenty-six years later, Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs is bringing more than 130 treasures from King Tut’s tomb, as well as from other ancient Egyptian sites, to America. Almost all of these artifacts, 118 of them, have never before been seen in the U.S., and the Dallas presentation will also include new objects not seen on the first U.S. tour of Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs.

Q: How were the objects on display chosen for the exhibition?

A: There are thousands of ancient Egyptian artifacts in Cairo and throughout the world. These 130 objects were carefully chosen to tell a comprehensive story about Tutankhamun and ancient Egypt before and after his reign.

Q: Where is the Golden Mask?

A: The Golden Mask (or Funerary Mask or Death Mask) is at its home in Cairo at The Egyptian Museum. It is a very popular object that traveled in the 1970s exhibition and many individuals have fond memories of it. Because it is so fragile, the Egyptian government has decided that it will not travel again.

Q: Where are Tutankhamun’s mummy and sarcophagus (coffin)?

A: Tutankhamun’s mummy and his inner sarcophagus are still in his tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. The outer sarcophagi and shrines are at the Cairo Museum. Neither the mummy nor any of the sarcophagi have ever traveled. In fact, the mummy has never left the Valley of the Kings!

Q: What is the anticipated exhibition attendance in Dallas?

A: Nearly four million visitors attended the exhibition in Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, Chicago, and Philadelphia, and we expect significant attendance in Dallas as well.

Q: Why does this exhibition draw such crowds?

A: This exhibition marks the first time in twenty-six years that treasures from King Tut’s tomb have been shown in America and the first time they will be seen in the Southwest. It includes an extensive array of more than 130 extraordinary artifacts. The Dallas presentation will also include new objects not seen on the first U.S. tour. The exhibition has proven to be one of the most popular art exhibitions ever presented in the United States and bringing it to Dallas advances our goal of getting people—from art lovers to first-time visitors—excited about great works of art and engaged in our programs. Nearly four million people have seen this show since it opened in LA in 2005, and eight million came to the first Tut show in 1979.

Hosting the exhibition helps fulfill the Dallas Museum of Art’s mission to bring great works of art from different cultures and historical periods to the people of Dallas and the region. There are no collections of Egyptian antiquities in the Southwest. The last exhibition of Egyptian antiquities in Dallas was in 1987—twenty years ago. Ancient Egypt is an important part of world history and our Western heritage; it is part of the core curriculum for every schoolchild and of great interest to people of all ages.

This exhibition is a unique viewing experience for visitors. It not only displays some of the most amazing objects from ancient Egyptian society but is presented in a dramatic setting that enables visitors to see the objects in the historical context of their time.
