Late Night Main Stage featuring Little Jack Melody & His Young Turks 8:00–9:00 p.m., Atrium Listen to the alt-cabaret sounds of Little Jack Melody & His Young Turks. Inspired by the likes of Jack Kerouac, Frank Sinatra, Charles Bukowski, and Tom Waits, Little Jack Melody is, as Rolling Stone describes, “supper-club class and fine surrealist humor . . . deeply weird, utterly fab.”

Don’t miss the chance to hear these two rising literary stars as they explore common threads of love, family, and the challenges of modern life in their new novels. Joshua Ferris’s novel Then We Came to the End was one of the most acclaimed literary debuts of the last several years. It is a wickedly funny examination of corporate office culture during the decline of the Internet boom. His latest novel, The Unnamed, is the story of a marriage in turmoil, and a meditation on the unseen forces of nature and desire. Adam Haslett’s short story collection You Are Not a Stranger Here was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. His eagerly anticipated debut novel, Union Atlantic, is a deeply affecting portrait of the first decade of the 21st century. Late Night Open Lab 7:00-8:30 p.m., Tech Lab, Center for Creative Connections Experiment with new media and technology during a drop-in, hands-on program facilitated by artist and professor David Bithell. Bithell will present a special performance in the C3 Theater at 8:30 p.m. Artist Demonstration with Frank Lopez 7:00-9:00 p.m., Concourse Join artist Frank Lopez to learn about 19th-century photography techniques and look through the period lens on a medium-format camera. Future Forward Forum 8:00 p.m., Cook Boardroom, Level M2 We want to hear what you think about the Museum—how we are doing and how we can improve! Join Director Bonnie Pitman and DMA staff for this forum where you can share your thoughts and ideas for the future of the DMA. Participants will receive a free DMA T-shirt. Space is limited to 20 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Forum will last an hour. Finished works, in-progress works, and creators of all ages are welcome! (2001) 10:15 p.m., Horchow Auditorium Be carried away to turn-of-the century Montmartre, the bohemian neighborhood in Paris that was home to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Erik Satie, and other artists, authors, and musicians who congregated at the legendary Moulin Rouge cabaret. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor star in this lavish, award-winning musical film inspired by Verdi’s opera La Traviata. This film is rated PG-13 (124 minutes). Brettell Lecture: Monet's "Seine at Lavacourt": What Is a Modernist Artist to Do in France in 1880? 9:00 p.m., Horchow Auditorium Claude Monet's iconic painting The Seine at Lavacourt was completed in 1880 and shown at The Salon, the regressive, state-sponsored exhibition that had prompted the impressionists to found their own independent exhibitions beginning in 1874. Dr. Paul Hayes Tucker, The Paul Hayes Tucker Distinguished Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts Boston, will consider this stunning painting and whether it was, in fact, Monet's "turncoat" picture and a retreat to more traditional painting strategies. Explore the modernist scene in late 19th-century France a decade after the country's disasterous defeat in the Franco-Prussian War.
