Advanced Placement Arts Incentive Program™
The Strategy
To support ten Dallas-area high schools in establishing models of excellence for AP® arts programs
The Mission
- To inspire creativity and artistic expression
- To instill appreciation for cultural resources in the community
- To build confidence and self-esteem through annual exhibitions and enrichment programs
- To motivate students to set high goals, seek opportunities, and reach their full potential
Background
In 1994, the O’Donnell Foundation began an AP Arts Incentive Program to motivate high school students’ interest and success in rigorous arts courses. In 2000, Advanced Placement Strategies, Inc. (APS), a nonprofit entity established by the O’Donnell Foundation, began operating the program.
In 2006-2007, ten high schools with AP arts programs, twenty-six AP Studio Art and Art History teachers, and thirty-nine high school and middle school Pre-AP Art teachers are participating in APS’s five-year Arts Incentive Program, Creating Schools of Excellence in the Arts, sponsored by the O’Donnell Foundation.
Courses offered in the program are AP Art History, AP Studio Art Drawing, AP Studio Art 2D Design, and AP Studio Art 3D Design. Pre-AP Arts courses that form part of the program may include any arts classes that prepare students for AP arts courses.
Program goals include offering a comprehensive arts education program for students in grades 6-12, creating ten high schools that will become models for arts education, introducing students to the local cultural opportunities, and strengthening the teaching of the arts through advanced teacher training.
In thirteen years, more than 6,000 arts students have participated in AP enrichment programs and art exhibitions.
